Grant Writing Services FAQs

What kind of nonprofits do you work with?

Nonprofits are non-business entities, not-for-profit organizations, or nonprofit institutions with a 501(c)(3). The nonprofits I work with are youth and family-focused, such as after-school and summer programs, family workshops, and schools impacting youth and families. My other work has consisted of community-focused nonprofits like police foundations and local art museums that need funding.

Why do you write grants?

Funny story. When I was younger and an aspiring writer, my mom would tell me that one day, I could write grants for nonprofits. The idea never appealed to me, and I told myself I would never write anything “as boring as grants” and that I would write only fiction and stories. When I made my way, unexpectedly, to a grant writing course in college, everything changed. I developed a love for nonprofits and the ability to bring out the craft of a story within a grant. So many nonprofits exist to make the world a better place and bring so much hope and healing to their spheres of influence. Being a part of that as a writer fulfills me just as much as poetry and fiction. It is a gift and honor to have the skill to write grants.

What is your history with nonprofits?

In university, I began working with youth churches as a part of my youth ministry minor and gained experience as a youth worker/leader. In 2016, I took a grant writing course that required me to partner with a local organization in Tulsa that worked with infants and children who were deaf or hard of hearing. This led me to my first grant and towards a love and appreciation for the nonprofit sector and organizations committed to positively changing their communities. After graduating in 2017, I worked with a nonprofit in Delaware as an Assistant Director for a summer camp and after-school program for one year (2017-2018). After that, I gained three more years working with nonprofits from Mississippi (2018-2019), Texas (2019-2023), Michigan, and Tennessee. In 2024, I officially added grant consulting to Pen of the Beloved, expanding beyond creative courses and poetry books.

What do I have to do to be grant-ready?

Grant readiness ensures that your organization is prepared to start applying for funding and managing what you receive. I offer services to assist in preparing for grants—some questions to ask yourself.

  • Do you have a Tax Number/EIN?

  • Has your organization been active for at least 1-2 years? (Some funders prefer three years.)

  • Do you have governance, i.e., a Board of Trustees?

How much do you charge?

I have a consultancy fee of $50 an hour. For clients interested in an extended contract, I offer a flat rate depending on the complexity of the proposals and the length of time we have to complete the assignment. Flat rate information is provided upon request.

How do you find the grants for my organization?

I utilize Instrumentl, a grant-seeking tool that offers grant tracking, research, reporting, funder profiles, and grant calendar development. My goal is to help you find the best fit for your organization and help you build rapport and develop relationships with potential funders.
