Seizing the Silent Moments

5a505c3c-620a-4ccc-885d-0c5b00397318Do you ever have these lulls in time where you have nothing to do, yet something hovers above the mental space in your head as everything coalesces into a moment of simple idleness?Yeah, me too!I'm literally sitting at my workspace tucked into the corner of my mom's kitchen waiting to leave the house for an event and as I'm waiting, I realize there's nothing to do.This space is silent as the sun gleams through the window behind me. Opportunities of taking these few moments to catch up on This is Us, or to read a few more pages of a book I'm reading don't sound fulfilling and I don't have work looming in front of me, so what do I do?I have found myself in this space a number of times. It happens when I have a day off work and a To Do List hasn't been created or it's already been completed and I seemingly don't know what else to do with my time. Yet in this realm of silence where only the hum of my computer is speaking and birds sing and call just a few feet away from me, I think of how just the other day I told God I want to spend more time with Him.There are a distinct pulling and loving nudge just beneath beating of my heart that is calling out for space with God. For times like this one where sunlight speaks volumes of the faithfulness of God and all I have to do is rest in it because in utter silence God can meet with me. In the absence of sound and busyness and creating, there is a lull in time, a beautiful resounding space where God whispers sweetly to this soul of mine to draw near.Over the last year, I know just how easy it is to fill space with sound and work and developing skills to the point I forget to just simply be. Seizing silence and resting in it.There is a scripture in Psalms that says "Be still and know that I am God."(Psalm 46:10)One translation says,

"10 Surrender your anxiety!
Be silent and stop your striving and you will see that I am God.
I am the God above all the nations,
and I will be exalted throughout the whole earth."

Being still means to cease in doing.

still (v.)

Old English stillan "to be still, have rest; to quiet, calm, appease; to stop, restrain," from stille "at rest" (see still (adj.)). Cognate with Old Saxon stillian, Old Norse stilla, Dutch, Old High German, German stillen. Related: Stilledstilling. (etymonline.com)

In stages of silence, I am recognizing the blessing it is to have a moment of repose to myself to be with God. Sometimes you don't have to turn on the music to fill the air around you. You don't have to do one more of whatever it is you feel you need to do because in doing we can become numb to the calling of quiet, the gentle whisper of Calm and Peace. When you find yourself suddenly in a moment of quiet, respond to it, rest in it, and listen to what God could be saying to you.Stay creative, lovely reader!

Sincerely,
