So, my last blog post was around May sometime. For the last two weeks I have been relaxing, somewhat, and taking time to breathe again after my internship. When I left for Delaware I had huge plans to write about my experience to keep all of you updated. However, that sadly, unfortunately did not happen and now I have about eight weeks worth of blogging to catch up on.
My experience in Wilmington, DE working with UrbanPromise was truly one that I want to write about because so much of what I’ve seen and experienced has been influential in some of the decisions and actions I have coming up in the future.
God is indeed good and what I expected going up to Delaware exceeded any expectation I could have set for myself.
I know some of reading this are probably wondering what is an UrbanPromise and what exactly did you do? Long description short, UrbanPromise Wilmington is a non-profit organization that works with “inner-city youth to equip children and young adults through Christ with the skills necessary for academic achievement, life management, personal growth and servant leadership.” UrbanPromise Wilmington has a summer internship, as well as a year-long internship that continues to help build community within the city of Wilmington. I did the summer internship and it was beyond words amazing.
I spent six weeks working at a camp run outside of a church and spent five days out of the week working with 11-13 year old kids in a parking lot that was my classroom. In the heat, I sat in a circle and tried to engage teens who sometimes expressed their dislike for my class and my methods of teaching verbally. Honestly, it was great.
I oddly enjoyed teaching in ways I didn’t think I would and over and over again, day after day, I grew to love them, UrbanPromise, and God more. There is so much I learned through these kids and so much Jesus taught me and is even teaching me now that I’ve left, and it astounds me.
So, here is to my first blog post on my internship and to many more.
